The central tail feathers are bluish-green and the outer tail feathers are green with light yellow tips. The female’s head is lighter than the male, and they have no red shoulder marking. The young reach their adult plumage after 2 years and the second full molt. These birds grow to a length of 13″ (33 cm).

Care and Feeding Plum Headed Parakeet

Fresh food and water must be provided daily. Plum headed Parakeets eat a variety of seeds, fruits, nuts, blossoms, leaf buds. In addition to these foods, you can offer them vegetables and commercial pellets. They like nuts with the shells cracked, such as walnuts, pecans and almonds. They also enjoy the same nutritional foods humans eat, including cooked chicken. Cooked beans, rice, and grains are also enjoyed, but soft foods like these will spoil in about 4 hours. An occasional millet spray is a nice treat.

Like any parrot, the plum-headed parakeet needs some time each day outside the cage, but unlike other, more demanding parrots, the plum-headed is not a cuddler that needs constant petting and hands-on play. Instead, it will likely be content to merely sit on your shoulder and “talk” with you. Without this level of daily interaction, though, the bird may withdraw and even become somewhat wild again.

Maintenance

The basic cage care includes daily cleaning of the water and food dishes. Weekly you should wash all the perches and dirty toys, and the floor should be washed about every other week. A total hosing down and disinfecting of an aviary should be done yearly, replacing anything that needs to be freshened, such as old dishes, toys and perches.

Handling/Training

Taming and training parakeets is pretty easy. Parakeets become accustom to their new environment fairly rapidly. Consequently very little time is required for parakeet training, they can quickly become easy to handle. Repetition, patience and time are the keys to successful parakeet training!

Social Behavior of Plum Headed Parakeets

Parakeets are very social with good personalities. They are friendly to people and like lots of attention and handling. Both males and females make equally good pets.
Parakeets are flock oriented birds, which contributes to their needing a full-time companion. It is best if you can keep them in pairs or in small flocks. Pairs of breeders should be housed separately, however, as many species become aggressive during this time.

These parakeets boast a quick wit and high intelligence. They are known as peaceful birds that get along really well with other birds. Sometimes they even act protective of smaller birds like finches or budgies. A Plum Headed parakeet has a lot of desirable traits which is why they are so loved in the world of pet bird owners. While energetic, funny and full of tricks, it also has a more affectionate side, enjoying to play and cuddle with his favorite person. They are readily available around the world, so if you choose a pet parakeet, you will quickly realize just why they are the favorite of so many.

Sexing

Only the male bird possess the namesake “plum head,” making adult birds very easy to visually sex. Juvenile birds of different sexes remain identical for twelve months or more until the males begin to develop different-coloured head feathers. DNA sexing is the only way to accurately determine gender before this point.

Speech and Vocalizations

Many of these birds especially the males are good talkers. The chattering that begins at about 6 to 8 months of age may give way to coherent mimicry very soon if an owner is willing to talk regularly to the bird. Speech is not a universal skill, and some birds will never exhibit this talent.

The plum-headed parakeet is a fantastic choice if you want a bird that can mimic human voices and words. They are noted for being good at picking up on human words, especially if their owners talk to their parakeet on a daily basis. It’s crucial to realize that even if your parrot can recognize words, they won’t understand what they mean unless you teach them.

Temperament

Plum-headed parakeets are generally gentle, social, and affectionate birds with their owners, although they can be somewhat stand-offish with strangers. They are relatively quiet for a parrot, so they may be the right choice for those bird owners who live in apartments or other housing situations near neighbors.

Exercise

Plum headed Parakeet for sale are very active birds in the wild. In captivity, these birds must have an exercise and play area. These birds should be allowed a minimum of 3 to 4 hours outside the cage each day, in a safe, bird-proofed play area.
