Dusky Pionus for sale

$500.00$1,100.00

The Dusky Pionus is a small to medium size parrot with a wonderful personality. They are sometimes referred to as the “Violet Pionus” and from a distance they may appear as a mostly dark brownish bird and moving closer will appear a more slate blue overall.

Dusky Pionus make very good pets as they are generally good natured. Once they are accustomed to their home and feel secure, they are less high strung and less demanding than many other birds.

Some other great things about these birds, besides their unusual colors, is that that they are quiet and unobtrusive. Though they may be the noisiest of all the Pionus species, they are still generally much quieter than other parrots. They make a great pet for people who live in apartments or in close proximity to neighbors where noise can be a problem.

Breeding/Reproduction Dusky Pionus

Successful breeding is helping to preserve the species and reduce the number of wild caught birds. There are no breeding regulations in the United States, Canada, or the United Kingdom, though other countries might have restrictions and you should consult with the authorities in your country before undertaking breeding.

Sexing Amazon Parrots:
Pionus parrots are not dimorphic and you will have to have them sexed by either a surgical probe, endoscopy, a DNA test, or a chromosonal analysis. The sexes must be confirmed and the pair must be harmonious, bonded with each other. Some species of Pionus have been successfully bred in captivity while others are quite nervous and difficult to breed.

Breeding Environment:

Breeding pionus parrots in flight cages is recommended. Because some pionus are rather nervous, it is typically advised that the nest box be mounted in covered darkened areas as high as you can, to encourage breeding. They will need a nest box that is about 10″ x 10″ x 20″ (25 x 25 x 50 cm) and has some soft bedding material inside on the bottom of the box.

Egg Laying and Hatchlings:
A Pionus female may lay up to 5 eggs and she will brood for about 26 days. The young will leave the nest at about 8 – 14 weeks of age, depending on the species.

Care and feeding of Dusky Pionus

The Pionus parrots consume fruits, berries, seeds, and possibly blooms in the wild. They also particularly enjoy corn grown in cultivated fields. A Pionus diet is typically regarded as an appropriate base to provide nutrition and diversity, consisting of a decent parrot mix that contains prepared foods, a variety of seeds, and dried fruits. Provide a daily complement of fresh fruits and vegetables in addition to this.
Since they are naturally active, confinement can cause them to gain weight. They need a low-fat diet, just like Amazon Parrots do. Offering a healthy diet is the first step in proper Pionus bird care. Steer clear of fatty foods; these birds are prone to weight gain. Don’t, for instance, hand out banana chips. This food is beloved by birds, but it is fried in oil and can cause obesity.

Water:
Give your Dusky Pionus fresh drinking water every day.
Bird Baths:
The personal hygiene of your Dusky Pionus parrot includes a regular shower for good plumage and skin condition. Dusky Pionus dearly love the rain and will even turn upside down, spreading and flapping their wings in grand enjoyment of this natural shower. One way to accomplish a shower indoors or in an aviary is with either a hand held shower sprayer or a hose with a fine spray head and lukewarm water.

Speech and Vocalizations of Dusky Pionus parrots

Temperament

The dusky pionus is known for being a calm, laid-back pet. Eventually can be shy or standoffish at first, but it warms up to its human family. The dusky pionus parrot enjoys spending time with its family members, so if you’re thinking about getting one, make sure you’ll be able to spend a significant amount of time at home with it each day.

This bird is less likely to bond primarily to one person than other parrots, especially if it is socialized with all members of the household at a young age.

Positive reinforcement is used to teach this bird tricks. For them, training sessions are a joyful and interesting experience.
