Care and feeding

Name brand staple seed mixes for your pet are available at your local pet store or supermarket. Canary grass seed, white millet, yellow millet, oats and groats, and red millet, niger seed, and linseed are all included. Some high-quality seed blends include thistle, anise, rape, sesame, and safflower seed. Vitamin pellets with iodine in them are sometimes present to prevent thyroid problems. Pellet combinations are also possible. Keep seed in a cool, dry area. Cloth bags are preferable to plastic bags.

Additionally, remember your Meyers can eat anything nutritious that you eat. Offer fresh foods such as eggplant, green peas, cucumber, young dandelion greens, sweet corn, beet greens, carrots, unsprayed lettuce, green peppers, sorrel, spinach leaves, tomatoes and zucchini. Fruits that are suitable are: Pineapples, apples, apricots, bananas, most other fruits.

These little guys are prone to gain weight so leafy vegetables and fruit are very good for him. Additionally a little meat for protein and a cuttle bone for calcium should be used. Avocado and chocolate are considered toxic for birds and sugar and salt should be avoided.

The Meyers enjoy their baths and whether you use the sprayer on the kitchen sink or a commercial bird bath, they should be bathed frequently. Otherwise their feathers will dry out and they will itch which can lead to feather destruction.

Speech and Sound

This species may be able to learn a few words, but they are not known for their capacity to communicate. They can be taught to whistle, click, and squeak, and will occasionally deliver an eardrum-piercing squeal.

Their natural vocalizations are screeches, or when alarmed, they growl, which can escalate into shrieking cries. They may also imitate sounds they hear in their surroundings.

Housing

They require a big cage with the following MINIMUM dimensions: 20″ length x 20″ deep x 18″ high. Ideally, it should be closer to 40″ long x 20″ deep to 32″ high with a bar spacing of 5/8″ to 3/4″. You have to remember, that a cage is not just a place to “store” birds, but it should be your pet’s home — it needs to be able to move around freely, flap its wings — and should have room for lots of toys to entertain your pet with. Love swings and boings are two of their favorite toys. But don’t overcrowd the cage; your pet should have enough room to fly or at least flap its wings.

Temperament

One of the most cherished characteristics of these parrots is their more docile, quiet personalities. This calm nature is what draws apartment renters and those in small houses and congested neighborhoods to them.

Meyer’s parrots may not be the biggest talkers, but they still mimic a few words, noises, and music. A lot of the sound you hear from them is screeching, which gets loud if they’re scared. Make sure they’re in a safe and comfortable space, and you won’t have as big of an issue.

Exercise

Meyer’s parrots are often happy to destroy a toy and hang out on a perch, but they still need to be allowed time outside their cage. If a safe flight area is available, it’s always a good idea to allow a bird to fly, both for its mental state and physical exercise.
